You might have heard, a new Sonic animated series is in the making. In 3D animation this time! Starring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Robotnik, it is an action-packed comedy aimed for children.
This is the only picture we have so far:
The show, titled "Sonic Boom", is character-driven: the plot or world doesn't matter much. What is important are the actions, reactions and development of the main characters; Sonic, his best friend and sidekick Tails, his friendly rival Knuckles, the cute but determined Amy Rose and Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman Robotnik. The doctor is not the only enemy though, we will meet a bunch of others, some familiar and some new ones. Badniks we suppose, but nothing is confirmed at this point.
So far according to the only official picture seen above, Sonic and friends seem to have kept their modern look, but with angled features (see how their usually rounder bodies are replaced with straight lines). There is deffinitely a difference, let's hope it will not be as dramatic as Rare's Banjo model change!
Sonic Boom will air first in fall 2014 on Cartoon Network in the US and on CANAL J and GULLI in France, with a global release to follow. So the English and French versions will be available at the same time! For now, 52 episodes are announced, each being 11 minutes animated shorts (so 26 shows if they decide to put 2 episodes together to fit in a 30 minutes pannel) and are co-produced by SEGA of America and Genao Productions, a French animation house. Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team and driving creative force behind the Sonic games, is the overseer of the series to ensure that it’s true to the Sonic characters and universe.
The executive producers and developers are Evan Baily (Gerald McBoing Boing), Mark Banker (Adventure Time), Donna Friedman (Iggy Arbuckle) and Sandrine Nguyen (Fish N Chips). Dave Polsky (My Little Pony) will also be part of the team as a writer. This is going to be promising! The voice actors crew will be the same as the games, so our beloved doctor will keep Mike Pollock's voice!
We really hope Robotnik will have a great role in this cartoon. If possible as much as the Man of the Year short. Too bad this one hadn't continued. Stay tuned for more info on Sonic Boom!
